M. S. Krutova. L. P. Zhukovskaya’s works on paleography in her personal collection in the Department of manuscripts of the Russian State Library // Petersburg historical journal, no. 1, 2025, pp. 165–175

Abstract:

The article provides a comprehensive overview of the works on paleography contained in the
personal archive fund of L. P. Zhukovskaya. The collection encompasses both published and unpublished works, materials related to their composition, as well as correspondence and biographical and official documents. It is evident that L. P. Zhukovskaya devoted significant attention to the paleographic characteristics of handwritten books. However, it is noteworthy that she demonstrated particular interest in the dating, attribution of scribal handwriting, the nature of the writing material and the artistic features of these manuscripts. The study of paleographic features of the handwritten source was a reliable foundation for conclusions about the textual andlinguistic characteristics of book monuments.

    PHJ № 2 (46) 2025 — A. I. Rupasov. VOTERS’ WISHES AS A SOURCE FOR THE STUDY OF THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC SITUATION IN LENINGRAD (FIRST HALF OF THE 1960S)

    The article analyses the wishes of Leningrad voters expressed at meetings with deputies of the Supreme Soviets of the USSR and the RSFCR, city and district councils in the first half of the 1960s. Attention to these documents is determined by two points. First, the blurring of the general picture of the socio-economic situation in Leningrad, which occurs when dealing with historical studies of the initial period, namely the stage of “transition to the stage of completion of the foundations of the construction of communism”. Secondly, the rare use of such documents in the analysis of the socio-economic situation. The study of the above-mentioned documents allows us to highlight both the full range of problems in Leningrad in 1960–1965, and the extremely limited possibilities of the city authorities to solve them, due to the lack of financial resources and the dynamics of the city’s growth.

    The article discusses the main stages of the publication of the notes and projects by M. M. Speransky (1772–1839), who created hundreds of works on philosophy, jurisprudence, morality, religion, realized and unrealized projects of the state system, which were published and republished from 1802 to the present. In historiography, his early works are the most studied, in particular, his constitutional draft of 1809.

    PHJ № 3 (47) 2025 — O. V. Tatarnikov. THE FORMATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE ORENBURG TELEVISION STUDIO DURING THE “THAW” (1961–1964)

    The article examines the period of formation and development of the Orenburg Television Studio in 1961–1964. The main focus is on studying the structure of the TV studio, its repertoire and the everyday moments of its work. The article also describes various difficulties that plagued Orenburg television Broadcasting in the early years of its operation. The author emphasizes the influence of the “thaw” era on the active development of central and regional television in the USSR. Due to the fact that television staff have a certain creative freedom during this period, the Orenburg Television Studio was able to come from chaotic broadcasting to regular production of programs and films of its own production on central television in the 4 years that fell during this era. The author concludes that Orenburg television of the “thaw” era simultaneously combined an educational, entertaining and ideological repertoire. This feature has allowed local television broadcasting to become one of the main ways for Orenburg residents to spend their leisure time. The article is based on an extensive source base consisting of office records, periodical materials and sources of personal origin.

    PHJ №1 (45) 2025 — T. V. Kudryavtseva. ABORTIONS AND ABORTIFACIENTS IN ANCIENT PRACTICE, PUBLIC OPINION AND MAGIC

    The article, which is based on information from the Hippocratic Corpus, the works of Pliny the Elder, Dioscorides, Galen, Pseudo-Galen and Soranus, examines various forms of abortion used in ancient society. The most prevalent method was the utilisation of various potions and pessaries, with several case studies provided for illustration. Moreover, it is evident that ancient Greek and Roman medical practitioners were cognisant of the fact that external factors, such as injury, physical impact, or exertion, could potentially result in miscarriage and could be employed as abortifacient agents. The surgical abortion was also described in detail in their treatises, evidently for medical reasons. The article emphasises that, given the potions were the primary abortifacient, the topic of abortion acquired a magical context and subtext, because everything related to potions in antiquity was largely referred to magical practices, usually associated with women — witches and healers. A thorough examination of the sources reveals a plethora of abortive recipes and instructions that are imbued with a magical undertone. The ancient authors reported examples of dubious manipulations and exotic potions, but their accounts were more focused on folk beliefs and superstitions rather than on medical facts. They concealed the improbability and absurdity of these beliefs by referencing public opinion and the saying “it is said”, “reportedly”, and “it is known”. On occasion, these learned authors engaged in discourse with “folk medicine” and articulated reservations concerning the efficacy of the proposed remedies. However, they were unable to entirely dispel the gullibility or the hope for a miraculous outcome, instead endeavouring to systemize and partially rationalize the fantastical recipes and rituals.

    PHJ № 2 (46) 2025 — V. I. Bezruchenko. THE EXPULSION OF THE SERBS FROM SARAJEVO IN 1992–1995

    The subject of the article is the fate of the Serb community in Sarajevo during the 1992–1995 civil war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The article is based on documents from the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the archives of the Centre for the Study of War, War Crimes and the Search for Missing Persons in Republika Srpska, as well as documents and materials from the International Independent Commission to Investigate the Plight of Serbs in Sarajevo 1992–1995. The Serb community in Sarajevo, which has existed for centuries, became the target of terror by armed groups and the Democratic Action Party of the President of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, A. Izetbegovic. A. Izetbegovic’s regime carried out the ethnic cleansing of Sarajevo, as a result of which the pre-war Serb community virtually disappeared.
