G.N. Ivanov. The Treaty of Nystad in the history of Sweden and Swedish historiography // Petersburg historical journal, no. 1, 2023, pp. 172–181
Abstract:
In Russian scientific literature the signature of the Treaty of Nystad is seen as a milestone event. Since the victory in the Great Northern War other states start to perceive Russia if not as a great power, then certainly as a regional hegemon. Therefore, this issue seems to be sufficiently studied, and a great number of scholarly works focused on the significance of the Treaty of Nystad to Russia and its place in Russian history. However, such approach overlooks the views of Swedish society on its significance and subsequent reflection of the Treaty of Nystad in the history of the country. The present work is intended to fill this gap and reveal whether the Treaty of Nystad is perceived as a significant event in the history of Sweden. The key object of the study is the evolution of the attitude of the Swedes to the Great Northern War and its results throughout the history. The author relies on the works of modern Swedish historians and the Swedish scientific literature of the 19th and the 20th centuries, which evaluated and analysed the events of the Great Northern War. In order to evaluate the changes in scientific and public discourse in the 20th century with the greatest degree of objectivity, the author also draws the necessary conclusions from Swedish educational literature. It seems that the Treaty of Nystad has no symbolic significance for Swedish historians and is not perceived as a milestone event between the periods of the History of Sweden. Nowadays the researchers of the Great Northern War pay attention exclusively to its internal political aspects, its influence on the following “Age of Liberty” and separately to the personality of Charles XII. A distinctive feature of the historiography of the Great Northern War and the Treaty of Nystad is the confrontation of the “Older” and the “Younger” historical schools with the traditions of the “Older” school dominating in Swedish scientific and public discourse.
