Abstract:

The publication unveils hitherto unpublished correspondence between the Estonian public
figure Ewald Ammende (1892–1936) and his brother, the merchant Edgar Ammende (1894–1978), who was imprisoned by the Cheka in Moscow. The published documents provide illuminating insights into the diplomatic tensions that characterised the initial establishment of Soviet-Estonian relations during the period 1920–1921. Moreover, they offer a comprehensive perspective on the intricacies of the revolutionary era that characterised the early years of Soviet rule in Russia.

PHJ № 1 (49) 2026 — E. N. MALM. IN THE MILLSTONES OF TIME. NEW DOCUMENTS

The article is dedicated to the fate of E. N. Malm. With his inseparable friend M. A. Bogdanov after the split of the Socialist Revolutionary Party they became members of her left wing and employees of the Cheka in 1918 year, sent to Petrograd to infiltrate the German consulate. After the events of July 6–7, 1918 they become resolute opponents of the Bolsheviks. They conducted underground work in the Smolensk, Vitebsk, and Kazan provinces. When they were arrested in Kazan in October 1919 they shot the former Left Socialist Revolutionary, the Cheka agent Zhuravlev (Petrov), and fled. They were detained on April 19, 1920, after a shootout. On September 29, 1920, the Moscow Revolutionary Tribunal issued a decision on their release. But then they were again arrested by the Chekists. In August 1921, made the armed escape from Tagansky prison, passed to illegal status, tried to recreate in 1922 the illegal organization of the left Social Revolutionaries internationalists in Petrograd. Being once again arrested, they were in exile in Siberia. After the death of M. A. Bogdanov in 1924 E. N. Malm continued for some time political activity. At the end of the term of exile in 1926, having moved to the Crimea, he became a specialist in Black Sea dolphins and algae. He was subjected to new arrests, and in 1938 he was invited as a senior researcher to the Neurochirurgical Institute in Leningrad. He was once again arrested in September 1941 and tragically died in October 1941 during a stage in Lake Ladoga.

PHJ № 1 (49) 2026 — G. I. Bayazitova, F. E. A. Giral. LETTER FROM CARDINAL DE RICHELIEU TO THE FRENCH AMBASSADOR TO SWITZERLAND, BRULARD DE LEON (APRIL 9, 1630)

The article is devoted to the study of a manuscript letter by Cardinal de Richelieu, First Minister to King Louis XIII of France, who managed the internal and foreign policy of France from 1624 to 1642. The autograph of Richelieu is kept in the Russian National Library in St. Petersburg as part of the Dubrovsky Collection. Although it was already known to M. Avenel, the first editor of Cardinal de Richelieu’s correspondence, it had not yet been introduced to the scholarly community. Also, a transcription of the letter without commentary or translation is contained in the latest monograph by A. D. Lyublinskaya. The letter dates back to the War of the Mantuan Succession and is addressed to de Leon, French ambassador in Switzerland. The letter concerns Marshal de Bassompierre’s role in the negotiations with the Cantons of Switzerland. The introductory article provides the context for the document’s appearance, reconstructs the series of events that preceded its creation based on historical sources, and draws a conclusion about the message’s place in Cardinal Richelieu’s correspondence. The article provides a transcription, translation, annotated commentary, and a reproduction of the original letter. The publication of this autograph adds to the research on 17th-century French documents located in Russia, initiated by A. Lyublinskaya, and advances ourunderstanding of Cardinal de Richelieu’s activities.

PHJ № 1 (49) 2026 — I. N. Strekalov. THE EPIC FILM “LIBERATION”: A CONTINUATION OF THE EPIC POST-WAR TRADITIONSOR A NEW STAGE IN THE SOVIET WAR CINEMA?

The article deals with the significance and role of the epic film “Liberation” (directed by Yuri Ozerov, 1970–1971) in the development of the Soviet film epic genre. Learning the archival documents of the Committee for Cinematography under the USSR Council of Ministers, the USSR Union of Cinematography Workers, and the Mosfilm Studios, the researcher concludes that the Soviet filmmakers came to the conclusion it was impossible to return to the traditions of the late Stalinist epics (“The Third Strike”, “The Battle of Stalingrad”, and “The Fall of Berlin”) when creating a new epic film about the Great Patriotic War, and they found possible to retain the epic form created in these films only. The film “Liberation” became an independent stage in the development of the Soviet military-patriotic cinema.

PHJ № 1 (49) 2026 — A. A. Ivanov. AN ACCIDENTAL DIPLOMAT: ALFRED WILL KLIEFOTH AND THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION OF 1917

The revolutionary events of 1917 had an impact not only on domestic political, economic, socio-cultural institutions and international processes, but also significantly influenced the worldview of the participants. For some of them, the rise of the Bolsheviks and the subsequent civil war became a traumatic experience that led to a significant shift in their system of values. At the same time, the internationalization of the military-political confrontation in Russia allowed foreign military personnel, intelligence officers, and diplomats to gain practical experience in dealing with socialist parties and develop their skills in countering them, which became a factor in their career advancement. It was the experts who served together in the American Embassy in Russia during the Revolution and in the American Military Mission during the intervention who later formed the core of the divisions responsible for analyzing relations with USSR in the U. S. Department of State. One of these specialists was Alfred Will Kliefoth, whose career allows us to understand many of the implicit aspects of the Soviet-American confrontation in the early years of Soviet rule. This article explores the evolution of the beliefs of A. W. Kliefoth during the early stages of his diplomatic career — from pacifism to anti-Bolshevism. The research is based on the documents of American government agencies, writings and interviews by A. W. Kliefoth, as well as the works of Russian and foreign historians.

PHJ № 2 (50) 2026 — D. A. Barinov. STUDENT FRATERNITIES OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE: FROM NATIONAL TO POLITICAL

Modern historiography of higher education convincingly demonstrates that national organisations(primarily regional associations) were among the most representative in the student environment at the turnof the 19th and 20th centuries. The author of the article attempts to trace the transition from politicizationof such associations to political struggle. Using materials from St. Petersburg University, it was possible todemonstrate that some political, neutral (cultural or economic) organizations of a national nature fell intothe orbit of larger radical parties, which often fought for influence over a specific circle. Other associationsgradually gained popularity and became independent parties / movements that claimed pan-imperial andregional coverage (the Belarusian Socialist Community, the Revolutionary Ukrainian Party, the Latvian “New Current”, etc.). At the same time, the movements that formed, despite their democratic slogans, were of anintellectual nature and arose far from the people whose interests they planned to defend. Agitation work wastransferred from large cities to the periphery later. The creation and politicization of national organizationswas facilitated by the democratic student environment, which the Tsarist government was powerless tocontrol. Upon entering the university, a young person became involved in public life and, indirectly, in formsof political struggle, which was encouraged by the illegal status of even non-political communities.

PHJ № 2 (50) 2026 — N. M. Medvedeva. THE ENEMY OF MY ALLY OR MY ENEMY: REPRESENTATION OF RUSSIA IN THE WORKS OF THE BRITISH CARTOONIST W. K. HESELDEN, 1904–1905

The article provides an analysis of the representation of the Russian Empire in the works of the British cartoonist W. K. Haselden, which were published in the tabloid Daily Mirror between 1905 and 1906 The primary focus of the study is the transformation of Russia’s image against the backdrop of the Russo-Japanese War. The analysis of 97 cartoons reveals that, despite Britain’s formal neutrality, the British cartoonist’s visual rhetoric was predominantly critical and hostile towards Russia. Thematic analysis identified predominant themes, including images of threat, guilt, belligerence, and weakening. The internal and foreign policies of the Tsarist government, as well as the actions of the Russian fleet, were subject to criticism. The study concludes that W. K. Haselden’s cartoons functioned as a tool for shaping public opinion by simplifying complex international processes into a binary friend-or-foe framework.
