S.L. Firsov. Reflection of the Korean War in the satirical press of the USSR (оn the example of the magazine “Krokodil” 1949–1950) // Petersburg historical journal, no. 1, 2023, pp. 161–171

Abstract:
The article deals with the “ideological historу” of the first period of the Korean War of 1950–1953, which found a peculiar reflection in satirical articles and political cartoons published in the Soviet magazine “Krokodil”. The author shows the methods by which the Soviet reader was convinced that the initiator of the war was the South Korean side, led by Lee Syngman, supported by “American imperialism”. The publications of the “Krokodil” magazine make it possible to better understand the mechanisms of political propaganda during the Cold War, in the mid-1950s, which had every chance of turning into a “hot” war.

The Greek texts of the old-Russian “Vita Antonii” and the “Vita Pheodosii” are especially interesting.

In the article on the basis of the materials of Leningrad of 1950–1960s such element of the everyday life of a city dweller as the leisure sphere is scrutinized. The author pays his attention to the number and geographical location of cultural institutions in the urban space, the variety of forms of recreation and their financial affordability. Having analyzed these aspects the article assesses the extent to which the altered standard of living of a Leningrader during this historical period correlated with the quality of his life. 

PHJ No 1 (37) 2023 – B.B.Pak. On the issue of diplomatic negotiations on the eve of the Russo-Japanese war of 1904–1905

This article highlights the course of Russian-Japanese negotiations in 1903–1904, analyzes the positions of the parties, examines the reasons for the intransigence of the Japanese side in the negotiations on the conclusion of a new agreement, studied the reaction in the ruling spheres of Russia to the amendments of the Japanese government to the Russian text of the agreement, the nature of Russian-Korean relations on the eve of the Russian-Japanese war. The author focuses on Japan’s responsibility for starting the war, showing Japan’s aggressive policy in Korea.

The history of Soviet prisoners of War in World War II remains poorly studied, but certain aspects of this history do not coincide with the next general line of historical policy every time and are doomed to oblivion. The research of modern Polish historians collected in the reviewed book and are intended to familiarize readers with this complex problem.

PHJ No 1 (37) 2023 – Elena D.Tverdyukova. Westernization of consumer values in the USSR in the first postwar years (1945–1949)

The article analyzes the trends of Westernization of consumption in Soviet urban society at the end of the Great Patriotic War (1945–1949). The author argues that the campaign against bourgeois values began even before the official announcement of the policy of isolation from foreign culture and opposition to cosmopolitanism. The fight against Western consumerism was waged in an environment of total scarcity and the low quality of domestic production, so that the media themselves largely formed an aura of prestige around foreign consumer goods. This led to the formation of a new culture of consumption, with a characteristic Soviet citizens’ desire to buy goods of foreign rather than domestic production.
