Abstract:

The monograph under review is a serious contribution to the study of the foreign policy and military history of Russia in the first decades of the 18th сentury. V. A. Artamonov used a large array of historical sources (primarily archival ones) and offered a number of innovative assessments and conclusions.

    PHJ № 2 (34) 2022 — S. A. Nikonov. THE ABILITY TO SURVIVE: METHODS OF ADAPTATION AND MORTALITY OF RUSSIAN HUNTERS IN SVALBARD AND NOVAYA ZEMLYA IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 18TH — EARLY 19TH CENTURY

    The article deals with the problem of the influence of extreme factors on the wintering of Russian industrialists on Novaya Zemlya and Svalbard in the second half of the 18th — early 19th century. Wintering, assumed a one-year stay of artels in the polar archipelagos, which could provide significant income from hunting sea animals, but posed threats to human health and life. The risks included the climatic conditions of the Arctic (polar night, cold) and diseases caused by vitamin deficiency (scurvy). For wintering, fishing huts (camps) were built, the building material for which was regularly brought from the mainland. Prevention of scurvy was carried out in various ways, both developed over the centuries (the use of plants, honey, etc.), and by means of medicine of the 18th–19th centuries. However, the ways of adaptation could not completely avoid the death of industrialists. The causes of death of industrialists were various factors — diseases, accidents at sea and during hunting for sea animals, death during blizzards. There are cases of criminal deaths caused by clashes between Russian industrialists and European whalers. A significant danger was represented by scurvy disease, the victim of which was not only individual industrialists, but also entire artels. Analysis of the materials of the Belomorskaya Company of 1804–1808 shows that up to a third of the artels became victims of wintering by industrialists. The significant mortality of industrialists, the inability to calculate the risks of wintering in the polar archipelagos, can be considered as a factor contributing to the reduction of fisheries on Novaya Zemlya and Svalbard. By the second half of the 19th century, the hunting of sea animals on Svalbard by Russian industrialists was curtailed.

    The collection of documents is a continuation of the work on the publication of official documents on the World War II and the blockade. Together with published documents of personal origin, the new edition significantly expands the source base for research on the history of the defense and Leningrad blockade. This is a unique, first, complete, specific publication of the most important documents of the highest regional authorities and administration, almost all of which (98%) were previously kept in secret. The published documents make it possible to study the most important issues of military production, the supply and distribution of food, the management of Leningrad and the Leningrad Region, the economy and urban economy, etc.

    The article is devoted to the study of the clergy of the Assumption Tikhvin Monastery in 1623–1633, its structure, number and their dynamics. 1623–1633 was a difficult period of restoration of the monastery after the events of the Time of Troubles and the fire of 1623, which completely destroyed wooden buildings and damaged stone temples. Based on the data of the complex of the monastic Books for Recording of Expenses, the peculiarities of fixing payments to clerics in them are revealed.

    PHJ № 3 (35) 2022 – V. V. Mirkin. Mobilization forms of labor organization in telecommunications (1940s–1980s, on the example of Siberia)

    On the basis of publications of communications periodicals (Vestnik Svyazi, Elektrosvyaz magazines), regional periodics, departmental publications, as well as archival materials, on the example of the Siberian departments, the personnel policy of the Soviet telecommunications industry in the post-war period is considered, the use of various mobilization forms and methods of labor organization. A brief review of such practices is provided.

    The article aims to show how the works of Polish historians viewed the activities of Alexander Nevski. Whether it was complete biographical information or only cursory, selected facts that have been repeated many times in numerous publications, bringing nothing to the knowledge of this extraordinary figure. It is important that the biography of Alexander Nevsky has not been published in Poland, and all information about him is scattered around publications on various topics.

    PHJ № 1 (33) 2022 — M. H. Zakirova. THE TURKMEN OF THE AMU DARYA REGION IN THE STUDIES OF RUSSIAN GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY IN THE LATE 19TH CENTURY

    Turkestan section of the Russian Geographical Society (TO RGS, 1897) at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries had a significant impact on the formation of historical science and ethnography in the Central Asian region. The main purpose of the study is to show the role of the Russian Geographical Society in collecting and processing ethnographic information about the Turkmens inhabiting the territory of Turkestan. The author sets a task to review the reports of M. V. Grulev and H. V. Gelman received during geographical expeditions on the Amu Darya, voiced to the Board of the Russian Geographical Society and published in the News of the Russian Geographical Society for 1900. The author concludes that the received information was necessary for carrying out the consecutive economic and resettlement policy of the Russian government in Central Asia. In particular, to settle the issue of relations of Turkmen tribes with Khiva khan, to solve the problem of land and water use, as well as to study the Amu Darya River for the development of navigation and, if possible, safety for merchant ships.
