A.A. Yefimov. Differential approach of the Ministry of the Imperial Court to rewarding for creation of the Oreanda residence // Petersburg Historical Journal, no. 4, 2022, pp. 17–29
Abstract:
One of the most important areas of activity for the Ministry of the Imperial Court was the creation of residence complexes for members of the Romanov dynasty. At the same time, the estates of the southern coast of Crimea rightfully occupy the second place after the capital’s palaces. However, in historiography, the problems of organizing, administering, and financing works have not been sufficiently studied, with the predominance of works of art criticism and cultural studies. The issue of determining, assigning and issuing awards and incentives to persons involved in the creation of residences is also included in this circle. The presented article refers to the study of this problem on the example of the first of the imperial residences of the southern coast of Crimea, Oreanda. To reveal the features and mechanism for determining incentives, the article refers to the analysis of correspondence between His Majesty’s Own Office in the person of Gofmarshal A.P. Shuvalov, Viceroy in the Caucasus, His Serene Highness Prince M.S. Vorontsov and the head of the Oreanda Construction Commission, State Councilor V.N. Oliv. The author notes that remuneration to those who worked on the construction of the palace could be given out even for an unfinished project. However, the main awards, as expected, followed the end of construction. The author points out that after agreement, the main list of those presented for awards was already submitted to the minister of the imperial court, who passed it for approval to the emperor. At the same time, the article states that for several people, Nicholas I ordered to allocate a less valuable or significant insignia, and two requests were rejected by him, since in the first case the promotion had already been assigned earlier and the empress could give a new one, and in the second it was considered that the award does not correspond to qualifications and status. The article also notes that several officials of the local administration who indirectly contributed to the construction of the residence, and therefore not included in the main list, received personal thanks from the Empress.
