Z.V. Dmitrieva. Mikhail Borisovich Sverdlov (1939–2022) // Petersburg Historical Journal, no. 4, 2022, pp. 7–16
Abstract:
On April 21, 2022, Mikhail Borisovich Sverdlov, an outstanding historian, source specialist, archaeographer and historiographer, died. The scientist’s entire scientific life was connected with the St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, where he went a long way from graduate student to chief researcher. Mikhail Borisovich was not only Russia’s leading specialist in history, Ancient Russia and Russian historiography, but also the author of manuals on the history, theory and practice of studying the history of Russia of the 6th–13th centuries. Over the years of his work at the Institute, the scientist’s creative heritage has amounted to 18 author’s and collective monographs, publications of historical sources and monuments of historical thought, as well as more than 300 scientific articles. Mikhail Borisovich was a professor at the A. I. Herzen State Pedagogical University for more than 30 years, taught courses on the history of Russia, historiography and methods of historical research. The scientific community highly appreciated the scientist’s works: he was awarded the V.O. Klyuchevsky Prize (2008), the E.V. Tarle Prize (2014), was the winner of the All-Russian Historical and Literary competition “Alexander Nevsky” (2019).
